Which colors to mix to get each color

Starting proportions with red, yellow, blue, white and black paint. Tap a recipe to try it in the mixer and adjust it.

Primary and secondary colors

In paint the primary colors are red, yellow and blue. Mixing two primaries in equal parts gives the secondary colors: red and yellow make orange, yellow and blue make green, and red and blue make purple. All three primaries together make a dark brown.

Mixing paint vs. mixing light

Paint absorbs light: each color you add takes away brightness, so the mix gets darker. Screen light adds up: red, green and blue together make white. This mixer lets you see both results.

How to lighten or darken a color

To lighten, add white little by little: that gives you tints and pastel shades. To darken, add a bit of the complementary color or a dark blue instead of black, which can make the mix look dull.

Frequently asked questions

What colors make brown?

Mix red, yellow and a little blue, or orange with a little blue. More red gives a reddish brown; more yellow gives a lighter, golden brown.

How do you make pink?

Mix red with white. A lot of white gives a pastel pink; less white gives a bright pink. A touch of blue makes it cooler.

Is the result the same as with real paint?

It is a good approximation. Every paint brand uses different pigments, so use the proportions as a starting point and adjust little by little.

What does mixing like light mean?

It is the average of the colors as they look on screen, just like the CSS color-mix function. It is useful for digital design, gradients and transparency.
